Dear ladies and gentlemen,

On behalf of the Scientific Council and the Organizers, we invite you to the European Solidarity Center in Gdańsk for the 3rd Scientific Conference of the “Media Mirror” series, entitled “SOCIAL MEDIA – FROM THE FREEDOM OF SPEECH TO HATE SPEECH”.

The theme of this year’s conference – the third in the “Media Mirror” series – is the so-called social media as a space of freedom of speech and hate speech. What inclines to organize it, is the need for critical reflection on contemporary public discourse in cyber media.

Social media offers a wide range of possibilities to formulate statements on any topic and in any way. Freedom of speech and perceived lack of limitations are conducive to expressing also negative emotions arising from frustration, helplessness, especially when there is a sense of lack of responsibility. Sometimes, however, which results from the research of sociologists of the Internet, it is a kind of fashion, form of entertainment, approved and imitated convention, as well as an element of a deliberately chosen marketing strategy. What’s more, it is not easy to set a clear boundary between allowed criticism and hate.

Hate speech affects the quality of social discussion in various areas of life. The abuse of freedom of speech, especially in social media, by their users becomes an important problem of scientific research conducted in many disciplines.

To participate in the Conference, we invite researchers from domestic and foreign research centers dealing with new media, media management, journalism, social communication, psychology and sociology, culture and its management, marketing, political communication and law.

The conference “Social media – from the freedom of speech to hate speech” will take place on November 8, 2019 in the hospitable thresholds of the European Solidarity Center in Gdańsk.

The conference is a joint venture of the Institutes of Culture, Public Affairs and Journalism, Media and Social Communication of the Jagiellonian University (Faculty of Management and Social Communication), as well as the Institute of Philosophy, Sociology and Journalism of the University of Gdańsk, the European Solidarity Center and the Pomeranian Scientific Institute named after professor Brunon Synak.
